1. Teething ring (chilled, not frozen) Cool in fridge, NOT freezer (too cold = burn risk). Silicone or natural rubber.
2. Chilled washcloth Damp washcloth in fridge for 30 min. Baby can chew on it — cheap and effective.
3. Gum massage Rub gently over gums with a clean finger. Often the counter-pressure is enough.
4. Chilled food Cold cucumber stick, chilled banana, frozen breast milk in mesh feeder. Tasty AND pain-relieving.
5. Violet root (natural) Traditional remedy. Baby can chew on it. Contains natural pain-relieving substances. Replace regularly.
6. Distraction Sometimes simply: go outside, new toy, water play. Babies briefly forget the pain.
7. Ibuprofen or paracetamol (for severe pain) From 3 months paracetamol, from 6 months ibuprofen. ALWAYS dose by weight. Not longer than 3 days without doctor.
8. Lots of cuddles The best painkiller: mom or dad. Carrying, skin contact, nursing. You ARE the medicine.
STAY AWAY from: - Amber necklaces (strangulation risk, NO scientific evidence) - Numbing gels with lidocaine (FDA warning, dangerous for babies) - Homeopathic teething tablets (recalled for belladonna content)
