Baby Gas & Wind

Gas is one of the most common complaints in babies. The immature digestive system produces more gas, especially in the first 3-4 months. Usually harmless but uncomfortable.

Posibles Causas

  • 1Swallowing air while feeding (most common cause)
  • 2Immature digestive system
  • 3Cow's milk protein in breast milk or formula
  • 4Solids: certain foods (cabbage, legumes, onions)
  • 5Overfeeding

Qué Puedes Hacer

  • Burping: after every feed and in between
  • Tummy massage clockwise with warm oil
  • Cycling movements with legs
  • Tiger hold: baby face-down on forearm
  • Simethicone drops: dissolve gas bubbles in gut
  • Warmth: cherry pit pillow on tummy (not too hot!)

¿Cuándo Consultar al Médico?

  • Hard, bloated abdomen that doesn't soften
  • Baby vomits and has gas simultaneously
  • Blood in stool
  • Baby completely refuses food
  • Crying suddenly stops and baby becomes lethargic

Notas Según la Edad

Worst in the first 3-4 months. Improves significantly from month 4-5 as the digestive system matures. May briefly increase when starting solids.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Does breastfeeding cause more gas than bottle?
Not necessarily. Bottle-fed babies often swallow MORE air, especially with the wrong teat size. Use a slow-flow teat (size 1 in first months) and anti-colic bottles.
Should I avoid foods while breastfeeding?
Only if you see a clear connection. Most babies do NOT react to the mother's diet. Gassy foods for the mother do NOT automatically mean gas for the baby.
