Baby Growth Spurts: All 8 Leaps with Chart & Signs
When do growth spurts happen? The 8 leaps in the first year with chart, typical signs, and what you can do.
The 8 growth spurts at a glance
Based on the "Wonder Weeks" research by Dr. van de Rijt and Dr. Plooij, babies go through 8 major mental development leaps in the first year:
| Leap | Age (approx.) | Duration | What happens | New ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **1** | Week 5 | 1-2 days | Senses awaken | More attention, first smile |
| **2** | Week 8 | 1-2 weeks | Pattern recognition | Discovering hands, connecting sounds |
| **3** | Week 12 | 1-2 weeks | Perceiving transitions | Fluid movements, sounds |
| **4** | Week 19 | 1-5 weeks | Understanding events | Reaching purposefully, rolling |
| **5** | Week 26 | 1-5 weeks | Understanding relationships | Judging distances, stranger anxiety |
| **6** | Week 37 | 1-4 weeks | Forming categories | Sorting, comparing, testing |
| **7** | Week 46 | 1-5 weeks | Understanding sequences | Stacking, ordering, first words |
| **8** | Week 55 | 1-5 weeks | Recognizing programs | Understanding rules, role play |
Important: These are average timelines. Your baby may experience a leap 1-2 weeks before or after. That's completely normal.
Typical signs: your baby is in a leap
The "3 C's" of a growth spurt:
1. CLINGY 🐨 - Suddenly only wants to be held - Cries when you leave the room - Only falls asleep on you - Needs more physical contact than usual
2. CRANKY 😭 - Cries more and seemingly without reason - Gets frustrated more easily - Wants to nurse/feed constantly (cluster feeding) - Harder to soothe
3. CAN'T SLEEP 🌙 - Wakes more frequently at night - Naps get shorter or are skipped - Can't fall asleep - Sleep pattern changes completely
Other signs: - Appetite changes (more or less) - Digestion changes temporarily - Thumb sucking increases - Alternates between hyper and exhausted
The good news: After every difficult phase comes a leap. Your baby can suddenly do something new — and the hard phase is over.
What you can do during a leap
For your baby: - More carrying and cuddling (baby carrier is worth its weight in gold!) - Feed on demand — now is not the time for schedules - Offer new stimuli: different toys, new textures, music - Be patient — they're processing a HUGE amount of new information - Maintain the bedtime routine, even if it doesn't seem to "work"
For YOU: - This is temporary. It will pass. (Write that on your mirror) - Accept help — let someone else cook/clean - Sleep when baby sleeps (yes, that annoying saying is true here) - Don't google whether "something is wrong" — leaps are NORMAL - Connect with other mothers going through the same thing
What NOT to do: - Don't start sleep training during a leap - Don't wean - Don't blame yourself - Don't compare methods ("It works for the neighbor")
