Cradle Cap in Babies: Remove or Leave It? Treatment & Care

What is cradle cap?

Yellowish-white, greasy flakes on the scalp. Affects approximately 50% of all babies in the first 3 months. Is NOT contagious and usually doesn't itch.

Cradle cap vs. seborrheic dermatitis

Gently removing it (if desired)

1. Baby oil (almond or olive oil) generously on the scalp
2. Let it soak — at least 1 hour, preferably overnight (put a little hat on)
3. Gently brush — soft baby brush, don't scratch!
4. Wash hair — mild baby shampoo
5. Repeat — often takes 2-3 treatments

When to see a doctor?

• Flakes spread to face/body
• Skin underneath is red and inflamed
• Baby scratches constantly (itching)
• No improvement after 2 weeks of treatment
