In short: Some tenderness in the first days is common, but cracked and bleeding nipples are NOT normal — even if the latch "looks fine". You deserve help and this CAN get better.

Why it might hurt despite a "good" latch

• The latch may look okay from outside but baby's tongue position might be wrong
• Tongue tie (lip/tongue restriction) — often missed, even by experienced midwives
• Baby might be clamping rather than deeply latching
• Nipple shape/size may need a different position

What to do RIGHT NOW

1. See a lactation consultant (IBCLC) — they're specialists, different from midwives
2. Lanolin cream (Lansinoh/PureLan) after every feed — safe for baby, heals cracks
3. Air dry your nipples after feeding
4. Try different positions — football hold, laid-back feeding, side-lying
5. Check for tongue tie — ask your IBCLC or paediatrician specifically

When it's urgent

• White spots on nipple after feeding → possible vasospasm or thrush
• Red streaks or lumps on breast → possible mastitis, see doctor
• Fever → see doctor immediately
