Postpartum Recovery: 10 Tips for the First 6 Weeks After Birth
Most underestimate postpartum recovery. 10 honest tips for healing, lochia, baby blues, and what you really need.
10 honest tips for postpartum
1. Stay in bed. Seriously. First 10-14 days: bed, couch, bed. Your body just did something incredible. Housework can wait. You're not lazy — you're HEALING.
2. Meal prep BEFORE birth Cook and freeze in weeks 36-38. Stews, soups, pasta sauce. You won't want or be able to cook. Meal prep is the best investment.
3. Take the painkillers Ibuprofen after birth is your friend. Afterpains, perineal tear, C-section scar — you don't need to be "brave." Pain-free mothers recover faster.
4. Lochia: 4-6 weeks is normal First red and heavy (like a heavy period), then brownish, then yellowish. Pads, not tampons! If it suddenly gets heavier → you've overdone it.
5. Midwife. Use. Her. You're entitled to daily midwife visits for the first 10 days and 16 more visits until week 12. Insurance covers it. USE THIS.
6. Limit visitors Grandparents WANT to come. But: visitors exhaust. Rule: Max 30 minutes. Every visitor brings food. No food = no entry.
7. Baby blues ≠ depression 60-80% of mothers experience "baby blues" (day 3-5): crying for no reason, overwhelm, mood swings. This is NORMAL and passes after 1-2 weeks. If it DOESN'T stop → talk to your midwife about postpartum depression.
8. Perineal care Sitz baths with chamomile, cooling (fill disposable gloves with cool pads), loose underwear, peri bottle when using the toilet. It gets better!
9. C-section recovery 6 weeks no lifting (except baby), keep scar dry, loose-fitting clothes. You're allowed to be sad if things went differently than planned. Your feelings are valid.
10. Don't forget: you were born too As a mother. That's huge. Take your time. The perfect mother doesn't exist — but the loving mother doing her best, that's YOU.
