First things first: Breastfeeding should NOT hurt long-term. Mild tenderness in the first few days is normal, but pain beyond day 5 is a sign that something needs to be adjusted.

Immediate Relief

• Breast milk — after nursing, express a little milk onto your nipples and let it air dry (natural healing)
• Lanolin cream (e.g. Lansinoh) — doesn't need to be washed off
• Cooling nursing pads (Multi-Mam, Hydrogel)
• Air on your breasts — leave your bra open for a bit after nursing
• Ibuprofen — for the pain (safe while breastfeeding)

Cause #1: Incorrect Latch

In 90% of cases, it's about the latch. Pay attention to:

• Baby takes not just the nipple, but also the areola into their mouth
• Mouth wide open before you latch them on
• Lower lip turned outward
• Chin touches the breast

Other Causes

• Thrush (yeast infection) — white coating, sharp pain → see a doctor
• Tongue-tie in baby — too short → have pediatrician/lactation consultant check
• Vasospasm — nipple turns white after nursing → warmth helps
