In short: A pregnancy test is reliable from the day of your missed period (accuracy: 99%). Early tests can be positive 4-5 days before, but are less reliable.

The different tests

Testing correctly

1. Use morning urine (highest hCG concentration)
2. Catch midstream urine
3. Hold test strip in urine for 5-10 seconds
4. Follow reading time: 3-5 minutes (DO NOT read after 10+ minutes — evaporation line!)
5. Two lines = pregnant (even if the 2nd line is faint!)

False negative possible if

• Tested too early (hCG still too low)
• Drank too much (diluted urine)
• Tested in evening instead of morning
• Solution: Test again 2-3 days later

False positive (very rare)

• Certain medications (hormone treatment with hCG)
• Early miscarriage / chemical pregnancy
• Evaporation line (test read after 10+ minutes)

Next steps after positive test

1. Call your doctor — schedule appointment around weeks 6-8
2. Take folic acid (if not already) — 400-800 micrograms/day
3. Find a midwife — RIGHT AWAY! (Waiting lists!)
4. Allow yourself to feel joy — you're pregnant! 🎉
