Baby Essentials Checklist 2026: What You REALLY Need

The honest essentials checklist: what you really need, what's a waste of money, and how to plan with 3 budget levels.

What you REALLY need (and what you don't)

After surveying 500 mothers in our community — here's the HONEST list:

MUST HAVE (can't do without): - 6-8 bodysuits (size 56-62, wrap-around are easiest) - 4-6 sleepers or onesies - 3-4 hats (babies lose lots of heat through their head) - Diapers (size 1 + 2, or cloth diaper starter set) - Changing pad (wipeable) - Diaper cream - Car seat group 0+ (mandatory from day 1!) - Sleeping space: co-sleeper OR crib OR bassinet - Sleep sack (TOG 1.0 + 2.5 for different temperatures) - Nursing pillow OR bottle supplies - Thermometer (rectal is most accurate)

NICE TO HAVE (makes life easier): - Baby wrap or carrier - Stroller (can also be bought after 4-6 weeks) - Baby bath + 2 hooded towels - Baby monitor - Diaper bag - Pacifiers (2-3 different shapes, babies are picky)

DON'T NEED (waste of money): - Heat lamp (warm room is enough) - Bottle warmer (warm water works too) - Baby shoes (unnecessary before walking!) - Diaper pail (regular trash + bags is fine) - Bath thermometer (elbow test is enough) - Bottle sterilizer (boiling water is enough) - More than 10 outfits in size 56 (they grow SO fast)

Saving tips: 1. Buy second-hand (clothing, crib, stroller) — babies use everything briefly 2. Ask friends/family — many have items in storage 3. Don't buy everything BEFORE birth — you only know what you need after 4. Baby fairs and Facebook groups for deals 5. Health insurance often covers midwife consultation, birth preparation courses

Frequently Asked Questions

What clothing size for a newborn?
Start with size 56 (for babies up to 56 cm / about 3.5 kg). Don't buy too much in 56 — many babies fit into 62 at birth. Better to buy 60% in size 62.
When should I buy the essentials?
Start around week 30, finish by week 36. Pack hospital bag from week 35. Don't buy too early — needs become clear only with the baby.
