Sun Protection for Babies

Baby skin is extremely sensitive — it is thinner than adult skin and does not yet have mature UV protection. Babies under 12 months should NOT be exposed to direct sunlight. Sunscreen is only recommended from 6 months. The best protection: shade, UV clothing, and avoiding midday sun.

Possible Causes

  • 1Baby skin has less melanin and thinner epidermis — UV rays penetrate deeper
  • 2Thermoregulation in babies still immature — risk of overheating and sunstroke
  • 3Even a single sunburn in childhood significantly increases skin cancer risk in adulthood
  • 4UV radiation is present even on cloudy days and in shade (reflection)
  • 5Sunscreen can irritate very young babies' (under 6 months) sensitive skin

What You Can Do

  • Shade is the best protection — sun shade on pram, parasol at the beach
  • UV protective clothing (UPF 50+): long-sleeve shirt, long trousers, sun hat with neck protection
  • Sunscreen from 6 months: mineral filter (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide), SPF 50+, apply generously
  • Completely avoid midday sun (11am-3pm) — UV radiation is strong even in shade
  • For sunburn: cool immediately, aloe vera gel, give plenty to drink — see doctor for blisters

When to See a Doctor

  • Reddened, hot skin that hurts when touched (1st degree sunburn)
  • Blisters on skin after sun exposure (2nd degree sunburn → see doctor)
  • Fever, vomiting, headache after sun exposure (sunstroke → call emergency)
  • Baby is lethargic, not drinking, no tears (severe dehydration)
  • Hot, red head WITHOUT sweating (heatstroke → EMERGENCY 112)

Age-Specific Notes

Under 6 months: NO direct sun, NO sunscreen — only shade and clothing. From 6 months: mineral sunscreen (SPF 50+) on uncovered skin, apply 20 minutes before going out, reapply every 2 hours. From 12 months: continue avoiding direct sun, but brief sun exposure with protection possible. ALWAYS: sun hat with wide brim and neck protection. Even in the car: UV film on side windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put sunscreen on my newborn?
No, sunscreen is only recommended from 6 months. Newborn skin is too sensitive for the ingredients. Protection in the first 6 months consists exclusively of: shade, UV clothing, and avoiding midday sun. For short trips: cloth nappy or blanket over the pram (ensure air circulation!).
Which sunscreen is best for babies?
Mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, SPF 50+, fragrance-free, no chemical UV filters, no nanoparticles. It works immediately (no absorption needed) and is best tolerated by sensitive baby skin. The white film on the skin is INTENDED — it shows where it was applied.
